Dream or Nightmare

This "5 and Dime" interview was conducted on the phone with Joe Sims, the lead guitarist for Dream or Nightmare on November 9, 2005.

Introduce your band Dream or Nightmare, your bandmates, and tell me about your sound.

We're Dream or Nightmare from rockin' Ohio. I'm Joe Sims, the lead guitarist, and Jim Arnold, one of our vocalists, plays guitar and keyboards. Dave Rhynard also sings and plays bass guitar. Russ Kirk is our drummer. We have many types of influences, not just metal, and as a band we try to mesh everything together. Our goal is to create a sound quite different from what you've already heard. We're not trendy and we don't try to sound like someone else. We want to create something new. Our sound is heavy, it's progressive, and a little doomy. People from different genres of metal like it because there's elements of progressive, power, thrash, and modern metal. Our songwriting combines all of the styles and all of our varied influences. The result doesn't clash, it meshes.

Talk about your band's CD, "Light Burning Bright Till The Dawn," and the musical statement you were trying to make.

You can purchase it at cdbaby.com, diskery.com, and there's one free mp3 at download.com. You can hear it at our website and at cdbaby.com. Our musical statement was simply to show our diversity as we run the gamut of what we're all about. Both singers get to present their different styles. There's acoustic stuff and keys, but there's also ripping guitars.

Talk about you plans to play live shows in 2006.

At the end of January, we're in Texas playing at a Dallas music festival. Other than that, we're sequestered by choice writing a new CD. We've played a lot the past year, but the best use of our time right now is writing new material. Any live shows down the road will be posted at our website, on our myspace page, through our Yahoo group, or via our mailing list.

What does Dream or Nightmare have in store for your fans in the next 12 months?

Our existing fans should look forward to hearing the new CD. If the Dallas show helps us drum up support for a tour, we'll do it.

Feel free to promote anything else you'd like that applies to your band.

Our official website is www.dreamornightmare.com and our Myspace page is www.myspace.com/dreamornightmare . We have an Electronic Press Kit at www.sonicbids.com. There's merchandise like shirts, posters, and the CD that's available if you contact me through our website.

Please share your thoughts on Dimebag Darrell.

Too many metal musicians are dying and it's disturbing. I was in total shock, it was so sad and crazy how it happened. It hit close to home literally because we're from Ohio. As a musician it makes you think. You have to watch your back and not be complacent. Dime was at the pinnacle of the metal world, and he walked out on stage that night like he had a million times before. As a guitarist, he was very influential to me. His squeals and riffs left me speechless. Dimebag was a great guy, and he would have had so much more to contribute.
